Clinical trials to assess adjuvant therapeutics for severe malaria

The current model for assessing adjunctive therapies for severe malaria (i.e. randomized controlled trials) is limited by the large number of participants required to reach mortality endpoints. This barrier requires innovative solutions including the use of surrogate markers of mortality. In this opinion piece, we examine the use of immune and endothelial activation markers involved in the pathobiology of severe malaria, as potential surrogate markers of mortality. In addition, we highlight the importance of risk-stratifying participants with these same biomarkers and the potential of repurposing drugs active on those pathways to accelerate the identification of effective adjunctive therapeutics.

As a result of the significant disruption that is being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic we are very aware that many researchers will have difficulty in meeting the timelines associated with our peer review process during normal times. Please do let us know if you need additional time. Our systems will continue to remind you of the original timelines but we intend to be highly flexible at this time.

Malaria Journal is aimed at the scientific community interested in malaria in its broadest sense. It is the only journal that publishes exclusively articles on malaria and, as such, it aims to bring together knowledge from the different specialties involved in this very broad discipline, from the bench to the bedside and to the field.
